Exhibition and Print design for Goldsmiths Design Degree Show: Pirate Utopias held at the Boiler House on Brick Lane, East London.

The concept for the show was taken from Foucault's essay, Of Other Spaces, which talks about heterotopias- as spaces away from societal norms created through deviant behaviour. We also looked at Hakim Bey's essay Temporary Autonomous Zones which talks about Pirate Utopias as self governed enclaves away from the restrictions of 'the state'. Goldsmiths design wanted to embrace this otherness and through a self imposed exile place itself outside of the typical design industry.

The architecture for the exhibition was built on the idea of scaffolding and suggested shapes, we also wanted the design to use the space of the Boiler House and we worked the modular boxes into islands and clusters.

The catalogue was printed on newsprint to be cheap to produce and have some of the qualities of a newspaper: informative, temporary, and conceptually led. It was designed so that the layouts of the spreads allowed for varying combinations of images, to prevent the flow of the catalogue becoming too static.

Also on the exhibition team were: Ruth Bucknell, Eleanor Dunk, Jamie Elliott, Liam Healy, Emily Hollingsworth, Fleur Melbourn, & Tom Taylor.
